Nel luglio dello scorso anno è stata annunciata la creazione della borsa di studio “The Nasir Jones Hip-Hop Fellowship“, creata per sostenere e finanziare studenti e artisti che dimostrano di possedere abilità eccezionali e creative nelle arti che ruotano nella sfera espressiva dell’Hip Hop. In un recente video il progetto è stato presentato in maniera più approfondita, anche grazie alle numerose interviste sull’argomento – che includono, ovviamente, Nas.
“A lot of people would think, ‘Oh, it’s just music. ‘Oh, it’s too vulgar, but that music represents the world. That music represents our youth. So when you don’t pay attention to it, you kinda missing out on your youth. The same youth that you wanna protect, you need to understand them by understanding the music they listen to.” – (Trad: Molte persone pensano: Oh, è solo musica. Oh, è troppo scurrile, ma questa musica rappresenta il mondo. Questa musica rappresenta la nostra gioventù. Quindi, quando non le presti attenzione, è come se ti stessi perdendo qualcosa della tua giovinezza. La stessa giovinezza che vuoi proteggere, ma per farlo devi prima comprenderne la musica che ascoltano.)
Marcyliena Morgan, direttore dell’Hip Hop Archive di Harvard, spiega invece cosa crede sia l’essenza della cultura Hip Hop: “The heart of Hip Hop is the critique. It’s about, are you working at the highest possible level? It’s about practicing. You can’t be a Hip Hop artist without a lot of practice. Hip Hop really does redesign what the notion is. So your competition is with yourself; it’s with others. But it’s not about just you, which is very much what happens in the academy. It’s about your contribution to the world as well.” (Trad: Il cuore dell’Hip Hop sta nella critica. Si tratta di rispondere alla domanda: stai creando e lavorando al tuo massimo livello? Si tratta di pratica e applicazione. Non puoi diventare un artista Hip Hop senza molta pratica. L’Hip Hop ha davvero ridisegnato questo concetto. Si tratta di competere con se stessi e allo stesso tempo con gli altri. Ma non si tratta solo di te, in gioco c’è anche il contributo che puoi dare al mondo”.)
Nas ha poi parlato delle speranze che ha riposto in questo progetto e del messaggio che spera trasmetta al pubblico: “Hip Hop represents fast life, for the most part. So, hopefully they see there’s a slow-down period, and there’s more to it than just running fast. It’s a marathon. You see Harvard and Hip Hop together, I hope that it says something to younger mes out there. I hope it speaks to them, like, there’s more to the future than what we’re racing to. Hopefully, this gives hope on an educational level.(Trad: L’Hip Hop rappresenta la vita che corre, o almeno gran parte di essa. Quindi, ci siamo accorti che si può anche rallentare e che c’è molto di più oltre al correre più veloce degli altri. E’ una maratona. Ora potete vedere l’Hip Hop e Harvard assieme, spero che significhi qualcosa per i giovani ragazzi là fuori. Spero che questo progetto li raggiunga e faccia capire che c’è molto di più nel futuro di quello per cui stiamo correndo oggi. Si spera, che questo messaggio possa dare speranza anche a livello educativo.)
